However, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 6,000 Pennsylvania farms have ceased operations in the past five years -- 500 of them in Lancaster County alone. Despite the farm losses, agriculture remains Pennsylvania's number one industry and it ranks fourth nationally, accounting for more than $600 million in annual revenue, according to 2020 numbers from the USDA.
